Quality is not a standard you meet. It is an attitude you carry.
Most operations teams talk about quality through audits, metrics, and compliance checklists. That is not where quality lives.
In August 1996, I was 27 years old and standing on the floor of a steel plant in Osaka. The job was to commission software for laser measurement systems used in molten steel transport vessels. Three weeks. 180 working hours. One day off. Forty degrees of heat and humidity close to 100 percent.
I had come from Finland. I had one trip to make things work. There was no budget for a return flight if I got it wrong. The internet was young. Remote support was not a real option. "Good enough" was simply not available to me as a choice.
That constraint taught me something I have not forgotten.
The Japanese engineers I worked alongside operated with a precision that was not procedural. It came from somewhere deeper. They did not follow the standard because the standard was there. They followed it because leaving the plant with something less than right was not something they could live with. The standard was the floor, not the ceiling.
I learned two concepts during those three weeks that have shaped how I think about operations ever since.
The first was Genchi Genbutsu. Go to the real place. See the real problem yourself. Do not manage from a report or a dashboard. Walk the floor, look at the machine, talk to the person running it. In 1996, I had no choice but to do this. There was no remote visibility. You either understood the environment or you failed in it. But I have since watched many operations leaders try to solve production problems from a conference room, and the pattern is always the same. The diagnosis is wrong because the distance is too large.
The second was Monozukuri. The art of making things. Not efficiency. Not throughput. Something closer to craftsmanship: the idea that whatever you build has your name attached to it, and that responsibility does not end when the product leaves the door.
Because remote diagnostics in 1995 were nearly impossible, I built a small capability into the system before I left Osaka: a modem connection at 1200 baud that allowed me to dial in from Finland, read log files, and push software updates without another intercontinental flight. Today, we would call it edge connectivity or remote monitoring. At the time, it was simply the only engineering response to a real constraint. If something broke six months later, I needed a way to fix it without getting on a plane.
That is what the Monozukuri mindset produces in practice. You think past the handover. You build as if the problem is still yours after the delivery.
At Ginolis today, nothing leaves the door unless it is fully tested, and the team is proud of it. That is not a slogan. It is a direct reaction to what I found when I arrived: a culture of cutting corners, of shipping something and hoping the customer would not notice. I came back from Japan knowing what the alternative looks like. An operation where people take personal responsibility for what they make is simply a better operation. The failure rate is lower. The ramp is faster. The customer trusts you earlier.
The second thing I know from experience is that quality problems in manufacturing almost always trace back to the same root: nobody went to see. A dispensing process fails at scale, and the R&D team says the settings were right in the lab. A production ramp takes 18 months instead of three, and the operations director says the equipment did not perform to specification. In most of these cases, the real problem was visible on the floor weeks before it became a crisis. It just required someone to go and look.
The companies that get this right are not the ones with the most sophisticated quality management systems. They are the ones where the engineers go to the floor, the CEO can read the production data, and the team treats a customer complaint as a personal matter rather than a ticketing workflow.
Thirty years after Osaka, I still think about the feeling I had sitting in the airport before flying back to Finland. Exhausted. Three weeks of heat, intensity, and precision work. But the system ran. The measurements were accurate. I had built something that would still be working reliably months later, from 9,000 kilometers away, through a modem connection nobody would ever see.
That is what quality actually feels like. Not a certificate on the wall. A quiet certainty that the work holds.
